Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) was an American painter and printmaker known for her association with the Impressionist movement. She spent much of her adult life in France, where she became close friends with many leading Impressionist artists, including Edgar Degas and Berthe Morisot.

She is famous for her portrayal of women's domestic lives, showing the average woman in daily activities. Her most famous works usually feature mothers and their children.
Cassatt's technical expertise is seen in a rare still-life painting, "Lilacs in a Window," which showcases her mastery of luminous color and loose, expressive brushwork.
